Ruby Redbird-Coming West
Part two of a series

 By Muriel Fultz

In 1921, Ruby and Sumner came on their first trip to California, in their tourning car. It was a hard trip, as they had to stop everyday to fix flats. They had to patch the tires and put them on the rims afterwards. When they arrived in Arizona their axle had been bent from the bad roads. First they gathered wood nearby, then built a fire and made it hot enough, to us billows, then were able to straighten the axle and use it again. When nearing California they found a wooden plank road and used it for a long time. It took a couple of months to get there.

As there were no hotels they stayed with friends or relatives and had fixed the car to sleep in. They also found room for their two dogs to go with them. For fun the dogs wore a hat or glasses as they moved along.

Finally they arrived in San Diego and knew they liked it best, because of the great climate, beaches, and mountains nearby.

After one more trip they were back in San Diego for good, and bought a home on Georgia Street. First life long friends and neighbors were Wally Dorman and his brother.

In 1946 they moved again to their last home on 50th and Adams Street and it turned out to be fifty years there.
