Ruby Redbird-Birthday Parties
Part five of a series

 By Muriel Fultz

Ruby finally became 100 years old, which was her long time goal. She had a big party on July 3rd. and wore a beautiful red blouse that matched her long red nails. The church had a party for her too and she and the minister danced together. Friends came by and brought pretty flowers and other gifts. The decorations were red, white and blue for the occasion.

Soon afterwards she had an accident that landed her in the hospital. The Doctor said that she needed the help of a full time nurse when she came home. The nurse seemed to be over medicating her so she would sleep more, but Ruby found out and got rid of her. There were others that she was suspicious of and Ruby began to test them for honesty. Some couldn’t take all the orders so Doreen (the bookkeeper) would try another place to get new help.

Once they were lucky and got a good hard working nurse that Ruby liked, only to have her quit after six months. She said Ruby was too spoiled and she didn’t need the money that much. I liked her and had hoped she would stay so we wouldn't need to retrain another. Next came Becky, a short little woman who loved to sing. She lived only four houses away and was already taking care of others. She wouldn’t work weekends but we were glad to have someone that stayed.

Now I became the one to take Ruby to church on Sundays. It was okay by me, as the people were nice. Her favorite friends were Marian and her husband Bill and they always sat together. Whenever I came back on duty there was news about what Ruby had been up to. I always wondered how such a small lady could keep things so stirred up.
